The Boerner Botanical Gardens just outside Milwaukee are a very pleasant way to spend a day or even a whole weekend.  There are several different garden spaces, but they are best known for their extensive peony plantings that bloom for over two months in the spring. Plus, if you are already a member of an arboretum or botanic garden, you may be able to visit the Boerner Botanical Gardens for no charge through the AHS Reciprocal Gardens program.  I have a .pdf list of the participating public gardens here. For more information and directions to the botanical gardens, please visit their website at http://www.boernerbotanicalgardens.org.
