Mole traps, mole repellents and baits. I've gathered together a variety of mole control products, however, I can only vouch for the mole traps. A wildlife educator from the University of Minnesota spoke to our garden club many years ago and he said the only sure way to get rid of moles was trapping--so that's the method I have always used. I've found that the scissor trap works best on sandy soils like mine; however, it is a little hard to set. You can find directions to set most of the Victor mole traps at http://www.victorpest.com/mole_instructions.htm. For those who have tried traps, haven't been successful, and want to try something different...I have heard good things about a new bait that is shaped like earthworms. Read more below. I do have some tips if you decide to trap. First, always wear plastic gloves anytime you touch the mole traps (even when you first open the box). Moles are very sensitive to human scent. If you have touched your traps with bare hands get an old soup pot and boil them in water for 30 to 40 minutes. Second, it helps to spray another scent when you set your mole traps. I use a fish bait scent available at most sport shops. Third, if you use a scissor trap, make sure you put it down far enough into the tunnel. When in doubt, go a little deeper. Find a fresh tunnel by stomping down the raised areas. When one pops back up you have a winner. I recommend buying at least two mole traps--four is even better. That way your chances of getting the mole/moles increases exponentially. Once you've set your mole traps in the fresh tunnels, check them often for signs that the trap has been sprung. If a trap doesn't have activity for 24-48 hours--move it to a more active tunnel. This trap method really does work--I caught 12 moles in 2004, 9 in 2005 and a record 17 moles in 2006!
