The vision for the playground came from Red Wing residents Audra Quandt and Heather Marx who were playing with their children at a Red Wing playground. Both have children that have cerebral palsy.
The two mothers began discussing the possibility of building a playground in Red Wing where children with disablilities could play and interact with other children. After gaining support from the City Council and several local groups, a Universal Playground Committee was formed. The two women, along with the committee, began their mission in May 2007 to raise a half-million dollars to make their vision a reality. After only a year and a half, the playground was completed.
The Discovery Garden was constructed in the spring of 2009 and the gardens and Universal Playground have already become a favorite destination for Red Wing area children and adults.
